"From my own experience working with Theron, he is a tsunami of information, both practical and theoretical. He loves to assist teachers in improving their writing and enjoys seeing them add to their list of publications."

What is MASH Academic Publishing?

MASH Academic Publishing is designed to bridge the gap between writing for MA studies and writing for academic publication, and is led by Theron Muller.

Theron has been involved in academic publishing as Coeditor of The Language Teacher, Associate Editor of the Asian ESP Journal, and Coordinator of the JALT Proceedings Vetting Committee. He also has five years of experience as a Birmingham CELS tutor, essay marker, and dissertation supervisor. His published articles include contributions to Teachers Exploring Tasks, a book that won the 2006 British Council Innovation Award, the Asian EFL Journal, Asian ESP Journal, and various other articles. He is also a winner of the 2008 John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship and has given more than 20 academic presentations to date. These experiences put him in a unique position to offer an insiders view of academic publishing that will help to empower participants to confidently pursue their academic research and publication goals.

The course itself is a 10-session, online, interactive discussion of various aspects of academic publishing, including the following topics:

  • Introduction to academic publishing
  • Writing abstracts
  • Critically evaluating the literature
  • Writing research grant proposals
  • Adapting assignments for publication
  • Preparing and submitting full academic papers

Enrollment for the current course is closed, but if you are interested in receiving enrollment information for the fall 2010 course, please contact Theron.

Costs

The fall 2010 course will be 30,000 yen, inclusive of access to the course Moodle, 10 live course sessions, access to recordings of the live sessions, and all materials necessary for the course. We use a blend of technology to support interaction in the live sessions during the course, including Skype, etherpad, and WebEx. The course will start in September of 2010, and there will be a free live session held late August or early September 2010 before the start of the course for prospective students to experience Theron's teaching style and to become accustomed to the kinds of activities students will be asked to engage in.

Regular course members will have space reserved in the live sessions, and enrollment in the live sessions will be limited to 8 students. For those unable to attend the live sessions, there is an option to join the course for access to the Moodle, recordings of the sessions, and up to four independent live Skype sessions of up to 30 minutes each to acclimate to the course Moodle and assignment requirements. The cost for this alternative option is 25,000 yen. If you are interested in this option, please contact Theron. The timing of this course option will coincide with the timing for the live courses. Students choosing this option will be encouraged to keep up with the contents of the live courses and to actively participate in the course forums for the duration of the course.

There is also one scholarship available for the course, which covers the full cost of tuition. Our scholarship recipient for spring 2010 was Jon Shave. Details about deadlines and requirements will be announced summer 2010.

For any additional inquiries, please contact Theron. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
